Richard spent three years alone in a prison cell. He had moments of knowing the victory of faith in prison. He had moments of despair. In both, he learned his limitations and learned to rely only on the atoning blood of Jesus Christ. He had no Bible, nor paper on which to write his thoughts, so he passed the hours in spiritual exercises and prayer. Every night he composed a sermon and delivered it. Only one who has experienced solitary confinement under the extremes that this author, Wurmbrand has gone through can write such a beautiful book on this subject. Experiencing horrors and torture, he only returned love to his captors, and taught this to his fellow prisoners, and from this book, whose quill was dipped in the ink of heaven, we too can learn more, to love those around us, who seem hard to love. Truly a lovely book.
Having read Tortured for Christ and his wife, Sabrina's book, they have so much to teach us in America. I am amazed and humbled by what they went through and how it brought them to another dimension in their relationship with Christ. This is a wonderful book and a must-read for Christians.
Wonderful book, especially if you are wondering what good you are doing in your current situation as a Christian.
awesome book awesome, it transformed my life where the bible is concerned and I encourage the world to buy this book, its real and it really testify through the life of people that only Jesus can prove that his love goes beyond boundries, as the testimonies prove the love of Jesus is beyond human comprehension.
Five stars is for the content. Wumbrand's words are priceless in describing his experience and his relationship with God in the worst circumstances possible. His life is a glowing example of loving your persecutors, faithfulness in a God who does not fail or fosake us. People say don't question God but he did. He had every kind of conversation you can imagine with Him. And Richard knew he was loved. I am overwhelmed with the depth of love demonstrated throgh this man. I would recommend this bokk to anyone. It will give the reader a deep sense of appreciation of life.
We in the US have no idea what Christians go through every day in other countries who do not have freedom of speech or the freedom to worship freely. This man's story seems almost unbelievable but I have heard so many like it and especially even in the last couple of weeks. The pastor in Iran being held because he is a Christian, the young mother given a death sentence because she married a Christian and is one herself. Her husband and children are American citizens. She has a 20 month old and a 4 day old baby born in a dirty prison. What is out government doing? (ZERO)!! A saying from Dietrich Bonhoeffer who was killed for standing against Hitler in Germany "
Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. not to act is to act.
If American Christians continue to keep quiet out of fear and live in apathy-we will find ourselves in the position of Richard Wurmbrand sooner than we might think. Turn to God before it is too late. Accept Jesus into your life as Lord and Savior or when these time comes you will have no faith to stand on. DJ
However, if you are not a good Christian I think you will find solace here and, perhaps, an invitation to a faith quite different from what you are used to.
People talk about how this describes a Victorious Christian. I have to wonder if I read the same book. Wurmbrand writes about how he went mad, only coming to himself when he discovered that he was in a straightjacket with a ball-gag in his mouth. He decides to commit suicide only to be thwarted. He despairs, he disbelieves, he hangs on to sanity and faith by threads. And sometimes it seems he falls. He is very much a beaten Christian, a broken Christian. "Whoever has passed through long years of imprisonment," he writes in another book, "remains a prisoner even after he has been freed." His victory is mystical, spiritual, nothing like the earthly blessings I hear promised.
Wurmbrand says that these are "sermons" he composed in prison and offered to his parishioners on the outside through the spiritual aether. And he probably did actually memorize most what's here. Apparently he had memorized the complete Bible in some of the many languages he spoke fluently, and had a keen grasp on everything from politics to scientific theory.
I'm not sure that most churches would want someone like Wurmbrand as a member. He actually believes, and takes the Bible as a sword or transforming fire, rather than God's Little Instruction Book. He wrestles with God at the same time he obsessively lives out what is written. He takes in those who have stolen from him. He brings home the Nazi officer who murdered his wife's family, so that she can forgive him. And takes no credit.
A family I know say they were given much after they came back from their sentence in the work camps. Wurmbrand's wife gave them much — I recall it included her stove. She refused to believe it would help her, because, she said, the prophets spoke of blessing coming to those who give up their last morsel. The father spent a few years in prison with Wurmbrand. He had nothing but praise for the man. His stories about Wurmbrand show a man wildly intelligent and obsessive about experiencing a real relationship with his Creator. This was the Wurmbrands in real life.
Solitary is a common practice in American prisons, of course, so this isn't completely irrelevant to our world. "With God..." can give us a insight into that, and also into the anomic existence of much of American life.
So I commend the book for those who aren't good Christians. The book is, as an earlier reviewer pointed out, full a wide range of heresies, so they are better to avoid it. For the rest, Wurmbrand buys a lot of "shut up and listen" time with his prison time, getting tortured every day and all. Maybe he's just the prophet my lonely generation needs.
